Astrid Menks is dead set on privacy, which can be hard considering that she is the wife of the business tycoon and stock market genius, Warren Buffet. Menks values privacy so much that she refused to make an appearance in the biopic, Becoming Warren Buffett. And given Buffett’s first wife was heavily featured in the movie, it came across as a shock to many fans that Menks was left out of the movies altogether. However, it was Menk’s wish to do so and she has since continued her life in private. It is very rare for Menks to make a public appearance and when she does, it is always with Buffet by her side. As a result, not much is known about Menks outside wedlock. So, for this article, we will take a closer look at the wiki-bio of Astrid Menks.

Bits and pieces:

Astrid Menks was born in 1946 in Latvia. Born and raised in Latvia, not much is known about Menks’s early life, and given her love for privacy things may not change anytime soon. Everything from her academic background and her family remains a secret. At some point in her life, Menks decided to move to the United States and settled down in Omaha, Nebraska. She began working as a cocktail waitress at a local bar and continued on the job before meeting Warren Buffet. 

An unconventional relationship:

Menks and Buffet met in the mid-1970s. At the time, Buffett’s first wife, Susan, decided to resume her career and took on a job as a nightclub singer by taking a job at the French Café. Menks worked at the same cafe that Susan started working in. In 1997, when Susan moved to San Francisco to pursue her career as a singer, she told many of her friends, including Menks to take care of Buffet. Menks started making homemade soups for Buffet and a year later moved in with him. 

Both Minks and Susan shared Buffet, in a way that was without jealousy. While Susan took on the management of the charitable foundation for Buffer, Minks took care of him at home. The trio even sent Christmas cards signed, Buffet, Astrid, and Susan. The author of Buffet’s biopic, Roger Lowenstein, wrote in his book,

“From the day she moved in, Astrid knew that Buffett did not envision remarrying, and that he was still attached to his wife. She made a home for him, yet she would see him off with neatly laundered shirts when he left town to be with Susie.”

The relationship worked well for the trio and when Susan passed away in 2004, Buffet tied the knot with Menks. The wedding ceremony was held in 2006, and despite what people have said over the years, Menks never cared about Buffett’s money. If the words of the local people are anything to go by, then Menks is very much a bargain hunter.

“People see her around town. She’s very much a bargain hunter and a recycler. She’ll be out looking for bargains for the house, shovelling snow or doing errands for him.”

Menks has also taken a few local causes under her belt including support for Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.  But despite all the media attention Menks garners, she remains a private person and couldn’t care less about Buffett’s wealth.
