Kairi Sane started her career in wrestling by training with Stardom in 2011, and on January 7, 2012, she made her Stardom debut under the ring name “Kairi Hojo,” losing to Yuzuki Aikawa. However, she soon became a founding member of the Zenryoku Joshi stable, which is run by Aikawa. She won her first title on April 29, 2013, at Ryogoku Cinderella, then on June 23, 2013, she joined up with Yuhi, Kaori Yoneyama, and Christina Von Eerie to win the vacant Artist of Stardom Championship. On November 4th, they were defeated by Kimura, Alpha Female, and The Female Predator “Amazon” for the title. In May 2014, Hojo made her debut in Mexico by representing Stardom at “DragonMania 9” and “Lucha Fan Fest 8.”

On August 10, she reclaimed the title of Goddess of Stardom when she and Takahashi defeated Alpha Female and Kyoko Kimura. She also won the World of Stardom Championship for the first time on March 29 by defeating Kyoko Kimura and Io Shirai, but she lost the championship to Meiko Satomura on July 26 following a four-month reign. On September 23, she defeated Hudson Envy in the finals of the 5 Star GP, Stardom’s premier singles competition. She was crowned Stardom’s MVP of 2015 at the year’s end. On May 15, she triumphed over Santana Garrett to claim the Wonder of Stardom Championship, her fourth shot at the championship.  Then, on August 8, she made her debut for the Inoki Genome Federation (IGF), defeating Jungle Kyona at a competition in Shanghai.

Additionally, on September 3rd, she defeated Io Shirai to assume control of the Red Stars block in the 2016 5 Star GP. But was concussed during the game, forcing her to withdraw from the rest of the competition. On November 11th, Hojo and Yoko Bito won the 2016 Goddesses of Stardom Tag League by defeating Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani. On December 22nd, they defeated Kagetsu and Kyoko Kimura to become the new Goddess of Stardom Champions. Also, On March 5, 2017, Hiroyo Matsumoto and Jungle Kyona defeated them in their second defense of the title. Hojo reportedly informed Stardom’s administration in March that she would be leaving the promotion for WWE the following month.

On March 20, she unsuccessfully contested Io Shirai for the World of Stardom Championship. On May 6, Hojo, Hiromi Mimura, and Konami won the Artist of Stardom Championship by defeating AZM, HZK, and Io Shirai. Without specifically naming WWE, Hojo announced her planned resignation from Stardom after the match. On May 14, Hojo’s Wonder of Stardom Champion reign came to an end when she was defeated by Mayu Iwatani during her ninth title defense. After losing the Artist of Stardom Championship back to AZM, HZK, and Shirai in their second defense, Hojo, Mimura, and Konami wrestled their final matches for Stardom as well as an unadvertised ten-match one-minute time limit series against other Stardom roster members. The series ended in three wins, six draws, and one loss.

WWE (2016-2017)

In March 2017, Kairi signed a three-year contract with WWE, reportedly for $60,000 per year, which was less than she was earning in Japan. Kairi was contacted and given the opportunity to join WWE, with a contract beginning the following year in October 2016. On July 13 in her WWE debut match, she defeated Tessa Blanchard in the opening round of the tournament. The following day, she defeated Bianca Belair in the second round, Dakota Kai in the quarterfinals, and Toni Storm in the semifinals to proceed to the tournament’s finals. On September 12th, she defeated Shayna Baszler in the tournament finals, earning herself a shot at the vacant NXT Women’s Championship at the following NXT TakeOver event.

NXT Women’s Champion (2017-2019)

In October 2017, Sane made her NXT television debut by defeating Aliyah. In November, at NXT TakeOver: WarGames, she also participated in a fatal four-way match for the vacant NXT Women’s Championship, but she lost since Ember Moon won. Following that, she competed in the first women’s Royal Rumble match on January 28, 2018, at the Royal Rumble, and she also took part in the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal at WrestleMania 34. Shayna Baszler and Sane rekindled their rivalry in July, exchanging victories in the Mae Young Classic Finals and at NXT. On August 18, the two squared off at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn IV, where Sane prevailed over Bazsler to win the NXT Women’s Championship for the first time in her career.

She lost the title to Baszler again, ending her reign after 71 days, on October 28 at the WWE Evolution pay-per-view. She was given the opportunity to face Baszler again at NXT TakeOver: WarGames, but she was unable to win the match due to interference by Duke and Shafir once more. At NXT TakeOver: New York on April 5, 2019, Sane participated in a fatal four-way match for the NXT Women’s Championship, but she was unable to win it as Baszler submitted Bianca Belair to retain. After six days, on April 11, she lost to Baszler in a rematch after Io Shirai attacked Baszler, who was attempting to hurt Sane. As a result of her defeat, she is no longer eligible to compete for the NXT Women’s Championship, which was intended to write her off the company.

The Kabuki Warriors (2019-2020)

On the 16th April 2019 episode of “SmackDown Live,” Paige made the announcement that she will be managing a newly formed women’s tag team made up of Sane and Asuka, who as a result were selected for the main roster. Sane and Asuka’s duo, subsequently known as “The Kabuki Warriors,” was pitted against The IIconics (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce) for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship right away. While the championship fight took place on the 16th episode of SmackDown, where The IIconics retained after they got themselves counted out, The Kabuki Warriors acquired it by defeating The IIconics during WWE’s tour in Tokyo.

Asuka used the green mist on Cross on October 6 at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, giving the Kabuki Warriors their well-deserved victory against Bliss and Cross for the Women’s Tag Team Championship. Asuka and Kairi were both selected for the Raw brand as part of the 2019 Draft in the middle of October. On the 30th October episode, they returned to NXT to defend the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Team Kick. It was the first time the belts had been defended on NXT, and they won. In a 5-on-5-on-5 elimination tag team match at Survivor Series, Kairi competed for Team Raw and was defeated by Sasha Banks.

On December 1st at Starrcade, the Kabuki Warriors successfully defended their tag team titles against Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross, and Bayley and Sasha Banks. Cross was submitted by Asuka. Following that, Lynch and Flair accepted Kairi and Asuka’s challenge to compete for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs. In a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match at the event, The Kabuki Warriors successfully defended their championships against Lynch and Flair. Later, Sane made her TV debut on the 20th January edition of “Raw,” losing to Lynch through submission. She then made a comeback to the ring on the 2nd March episode of “Raw,” losing to Shayna Baszler.

The Kabuki Warriors’ 181-day run as Women’s Tag Team Champions—the longest reign for the belts to date—came to an end when they were defeated by Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross on the opening night of Wrestlemania 36. Becky Lynch, the current Raw Women’s Champion, gave up her title on the May 11 episode of “Raw” in order to go on maternity leave, but on the June 6 episode of “Raw,” which was taped in May and shown on tape delay, she sustained a serious head injury. Then, on the sixth episode of “Raw,” Sane competed against Sasha Banks in a match that resulted in a disqualification due to Bayley’s interference, marking her first appearance on television since suffering an injury.

The Kabuki Warriors attempted to challenge Banks and Bayley for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship a few weeks later, but were unsuccessful. On the 20th July episode of “Raw,” Kairi defeated Bayley, the SmackDown Women’s Champion, in a non-title contest. The following week on Raw, Bayley violently attacked Kairi backstage during the Asuka vs. Banks Raw Women’s Championship match. Sane declared on Twitter that she was leaving WWE and returning to Japan to be with her husband. This was done to remove her from the storylines. Sane’s departure was later made official by WWE on their website.

On July 29, 2020, WWE’s YouTube account posted a video documenting Sane’s final week in the company. In the film, Sane says goodbye to everyone in WWE as she prepares to return to Japan, and stars including Asuka, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Akira Tozawa all wish her well. Additionally, Kairi disclosed on October 2, 2020, that she has begun serving as an ambassador and trainer for the WWE branch in her home country of Japan. She participated on the commentary team for the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on October 15 in Japanese.
