Sharon married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa from the neighbouring Mattagami First Nation, and the couple produced a son, Mark.

Jerry legally adopted the girls and gave them the surname Twain. Jerry and Sharon adopted Jerry’s young nephew Darryl when Mark was a toddler after his mother died.

Because of her relationship with Jerry, the media has wrongly reported that Twain is of Ojibwe origin.
