Fred  Roggin ( Full name Frederick Jay Roggin ) is an American journalist. He currently serves as a sports anchor at KNBC-TV based in Los Angeles, California. Fred is also an afternoon show co-host at KLAC. Before that, he served as a sports talk radio host at KMPC based in Los Angeles.

He hosted a morning sports show at KLAC with the Los Angeles Times sports columnist T.J. Simers and Simers’ daughter Tracy before joining KMPC. Fred worked as a host for NBC Sports coverage of the Summer Olympics that was held in  2008. He also has a national profile, doing sports coverage for NBC Sports occasionally. Triathletes Julie Moss, Mike Plant, and Fred had the call for the tape-delayed 1990 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

He has become a regular during his coverage of the Olympics. Fred hosted the daily coverage of curling during 2006, 2010, and 2014 Winter Olympics, as well as the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympics. Fred also anchored for boxing coverage from the venue, which aired on CNBC as well as Universal HD. He was also a play-by-play announcer on many National Football League telecasts. In January 1998, the network stopped the coverage after Super Bowl XXXII.

He was born to his father Hy and mother Irene in Detroit, Michigan, United States. His father was a pharmacist but unfortunately, his pharmacy was burned during the 1967 civil rights riots. At the age of 13,  Fred lost his father Hy due to a heart attack. At the age of 26, he again lost his mother Irene, who died of cancer. A year and a half later, Fred’s stepfather called Bill Katanick, who married Irene after Hy died also lost his life to cancer. Fren was raised along with his brother Eric a former employee of an airline in Phoenix.

He first married his wife Eileen and together had two children namely, Shannon Irene and Jeffrey Hy who was born on April 14, 1988. He joined KNBC in 1980 after he left KPNX in Phoenix, Arizona. Before that, Fred served as a sports anchor at KYEL-TV ( currently known as KYMA-DT) in Yuma, Arizona. He worked there between 1977 and 1978. On September 22, 2014, his was launched on KFWB based in Los Angeles, branded as The Beast 980.

The sports radio talk show aired weekdays from 3 pm-6 pm on AM 980 in Southern California, and on KFWB’s website (thebeast980.com). This show was on air until KFWB’s sports talk format stopped on March 1, 2016. In August 2016, Fred started to work as a new co-host of KLAC’s noon-to-3 pm show along with Leeann Tweeden. He replaced Bill Reiter, who left KLAC to join the CBS Sports Radio network. In 1993  Fred was featured in the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Southern California.

Fred Roggin Show

Currently, Fed is responsible for taped sports scores as well as highlight recaps for NBC’s early morning newscasts show. The show airs on NBC’s Early Today as well as MSNBC’s First Look shows together with a separate segment for Morning Joe. Before that, those segments aired on CNBC’s former early morning show called Wake Up Call. Fred also co-hosted the interactive TV show called GSN Live which airs on GSN on weekdays from 3 PM to 6 PM. His c0-host used to be Debra Skelton until he left the show on July 2, 2009. The show began on February 25, 2008.

Fed as well started another show of his dreams in 2009. It was a game show called The Money List. It was recorded in the UK at The London Studios. The show mainly focused on the United Kingdom’s version of Who Dares Wins!. From 2009 to 2013, Fred hosted the NBC show called “The Filter with Fred Roggin”  The show starred Debra Wilson, Melissa Rivers, Charlotte Laws, Leo Terrell,  as well as Amy Alkon. They all used to discuss the news topics of the day. On April 14, 2013, NBC’s “Going Roggin”  was launched at midnight. The show aired most Saturdays at 3 pm and Sundays at midnight.

He currently hosts a new sports-themed game show called The Challenge. The show airs after NBC’s Sunday Night Football telecasts locally on KNBC. For some years in the early 1990s, Fred hosted Fred’s Heroes show which was a collection of unusual sports highlights that were presented as a syndicated 30-minute show. Those clips currently air as part of his new Sunday night program on KNBC.
