Before Jenny Slate became a household name in Hollywood, she was married to a filmmaker and former husband, Dean Fleischer-Camp. 

After Slate was fired from Saturday Night Live, she and her ex-husband collaborated on the 2010 stop-action short film Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. 

Slate was the voice of the titular character, an animated anthropomorphic shell.

The comedy won Best Animated Short at AFI Fest 2010 and was screened at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

A year later, the sequel Marcel the Shell with Two Shoes On came out, which was equally successful. 

Slate and her former husband were married in 2012, but after nearly four years of marriage, the couple split in 2016.

According to Slate, their divorce was amicable and attributed the split to growing apart. 

In a separate interview with Vulture, she opened up about the divorce. 

We’re good friends. That’s why we got divorced. If we didn’t get divorced, we wouldn’t be able to be friends, and we wouldn’t be able to do our work. We had just grown apart. It wasn’t easy, but not bad. No, it was bad. But not essentially bad.

She also added that despite the amicable split, she still needed to mourn the separation and described it as a “destruction of a belief system.”

Jenny Slate’s Relationships After Divorce

A few months after her split with her former husband, she began dating Chris Evans.

The actress and her former boyfriend first met at a “chemistry read” for Gifted in September 2015 and immediately hit it off.

But they only fell in love after Slate’s divorce outside of the set. 

But with conflicting work schedules and differing lifestyles (his A-list status and her under-the-radar career), the two eventually called it quits in March 2018.

After her breakup with her boyfriend, Slate began dating artist and writer Ben Shattuck. 

And less than a year after making their official debut as a couple, Slate got engaged to her new boyfriend in September 2019.

The Gifted actress announced the news on her Instagram with a carousel of her and her soon-to-be husband on their vacation in France. 

The last picture in the carousel featured Slate showing off her new engagement ring. The caption revealed that her soon-to-be husband took her on a picnic date and proposed to her. 

“I love you @benshattuck_art, you are the kindest and brightest and I am so grateful and here we go and keep going,” the comedian wrote.

After the engagement, the couple gave birth to their first child in February 2021. 

Slate revealed to Entertainment Tonight their baby’s name was Ida Lupine. She shared that she and her partner chose the name Ida because they loved it, while Lupine was the couple’s favorite flower. She also opened up about motherhood. 

Motherhood is the most meaningful thing that has ever happened to me. I feel really lucky. Being a mother is such a joy.

The actress had first announced her pregnancy last December during her appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. 

Slate showed her budding belly in a black dress and joked that the last nine months for her had been very different and “pregnant for [her].”

She also acknowledged that it was nice to have something incredibly positive during a difficult time.
